lyrics

The Preacher’s Daughter

He rode into town through a summer’s haze
The trouble that followed was not far away
He stopped and smiled a long and easy smile
And the preacher’s daughter tarried for a while
She heard a strange song upon that pale wind
Took one look at him and knew she would sin
The carriage rattled on the Sabbath day
The preacher ranted and the preacher raved
He murmured darkly about pleasure and sin
You must go without to be clean within
But she saw his strong silhouette
against the summer sky
As the hammer hits the anvil
she knew she would cry

As day expires into night
they held each other and took flight
A stolen moment neath a bloodless moon
Together, but parted all too soon
For they were not alone
as they fell in slumber deep
And awoke to face the preacher‘s cold cold steel
Oh father do not kill him
for he is my love and life
If you must kill, kill me with your steely knife
Oh my daughter I will hear your painful plea
But tomorrow he will swing
beneath....the gallow’s tree

The hanging judge viewed the scene
through a jaundiced eye
Pointed to the tree and said ‘you will surely die’
But the women of the town
stood up brave and strong
“You cannot kill this boy
for he has done nothing wrong
For if you hang him no lovin there will be
No comfort in the dead of night
you must set him free
They have not offended any God above
Their only crime is to be young..... and in love”

The men assembled one more time
and absolved the boy of his crime
‘yes we will set you free
but from this town you must leave’

So he held her close and said I love you so
and she cried and cried, cried, and cried
as from the town he rode
but she heard a strange song
upon that pale wind and she knew.....
she had not sinned

So men love your women
love them hard and long cherish them forever
else you’ll end up....in a song..........Singin ....
